Flight Controls — FAA A&P Test Questions (ACS AM.II.C)

Flight controls is a heavily tested subject area on the airframe side of the A&P written. The FAA tests it in two halves: what each surface and tab does aerodynamically, and how you rig, balance and inspect the cables, rods and bellcranks that move them. Most questions are recall, naming a surface, an axis or a tab, but the wording is precise enough that a loose grasp of the tab families will cost you points you should not lose.

What ACS AM.II.C covers

AM.II.C follows the flight control chapters of FAA-H-8083-31. Start with the three axes, because the wording of the questions depends on them. An airplane rolls about its longitudinal axis, pitches about its lateral axis, and yaws about its vertical axis. Ailerons, elevator and rudder are the primary controls, one for each axis. Everything else, including flaps, slats, spoilers, speed brakes and tabs, is secondary or auxiliary, and the test expects you to sort them into the right group. Flaps and spoilers come up constantly. Flaps increase the camber of the wing, and Fowler flaps also increase its area, raising both lift and drag so the airplane can approach more slowly and more steeply. Spoilers do the opposite, disrupting lift and adding drag, and on many airplanes they also assist roll. The tab family is where the questions get picky. A trim tab is set to hold a surface where the pilot wants it and relieve control pressure. A balance tab is linked to move opposite the control surface, so airflow on the tab helps drive the surface and lowers stick force. A servo tab is driven directly by the cockpit controls and moves the surface for you. An anti-servo tab moves in the same direction as the surface and increases the force the pilot feels, which is why a stabilator, a one-piece pitch surface that is sensitive by nature, carries one. Three traps candidates fall into

  1. Longitudinal sounds like lengthwise, and lengthwise makes candidates think of pitch, so they answer elevator when asked which surface controls movement about the longitudinal axis. The airplane rolls about that axis and the ailerons control it. Elevator works the lateral axis and rudder the vertical axis.
  2. Balance tabs and anti-servo tabs get swapped constantly. A balance tab deflects opposite the control surface and reduces the force the pilot has to apply. An anti-servo tab deflects the same direction as the surface and increases that force, which is exactly the point on an oversensitive stabilator.
  3. A control surface that comes back from paint or a skin repair looks finished, but weight added behind the hinge line changes its static balance and reduces flutter margin. The surface has to be rebalanced within the manufacturer's published limits, and repair data often caps how much finish a surface may carry.

The anti-servo tab deflects in the same direction as the stabilator, increasing the aerodynamic force the pilot must overcome, and on most installations it doubles as the pitch trim tab.
Do I have to rebalance a control surface after painting it?
Assume yes unless the manufacturer's data says otherwise. Paint, filler and repair patches add weight, and weight added behind the hinge line shifts the balance aft and reduces flutter margin. Manufacturers publish a static balance limit and a rebalancing procedure, and many also limit how many coats of finish a surface may carry. Check the airframe maintenance manual before you spray anything.
What do wing flaps actually do?
Extending flaps increases the camber of the wing, and Fowler flaps also increase wing area. The result is more lift at a given airspeed, along with more drag. That lets the airplane fly a slower approach on a steeper path without gaining speed, and it shortens takeoff and landing distance. Plain, split, slotted and Fowler are the four types the written test names.
