- What are the primary flight controls on an airplane?
- The ailerons, elevator and rudder. Each controls the airplane about one axis: ailerons roll it about the longitudinal axis, the elevator pitches it about the lateral axis, and the rudder yaws it about the vertical axis. Flaps, slats, spoilers, speed brakes and trim tabs are secondary or auxiliary controls, because they change performance or reduce control force rather than provide primary control of the aircraft.
- What is the difference between a servo tab, a balance tab and an anti-servo tab?
- A servo tab is moved directly by the cockpit controls, and the aerodynamic load it generates moves the control surface. A balance tab is linked to move opposite the surface as the surface deflects, assisting that movement and lowering stick force. An anti-servo tab moves the same direction as the surface and raises stick force, giving the pilot feel and discouraging over-control.
- Why does a stabilator have an anti-servo tab?
- A stabilator is a one-piece surface that provides pitch control, and because the entire surface pivots, a small control input produces a large change in lift. Left alone it feels light and is easy to over-control. The anti-servo tab deflects in the same direction as the stabilator, increasing the aerodynamic force the pilot must overcome, and on most installations it doubles as the pitch trim tab.
- Do I have to rebalance a control surface after painting it?
- Assume yes unless the manufacturer's data says otherwise. Paint, filler and repair patches add weight, and weight added behind the hinge line shifts the balance aft and reduces flutter margin. Manufacturers publish a static balance limit and a rebalancing procedure, and many also limit how many coats of finish a surface may carry. Check the airframe maintenance manual before you spray anything.
- What do wing flaps actually do?
- Extending flaps increases the camber of the wing, and Fowler flaps also increase wing area. The result is more lift at a given airspeed, along with more drag. That lets the airplane fly a slower approach on a steeper path without gaining speed, and it shortens takeoff and landing distance. Plain, split, slotted and Fowler are the four types the written test names.
