- How is water moved from the potable water tank to the faucets?
- On most transport aircraft the tank itself is pressurized with air, supplied by engine bleed air or by a small dedicated compressor. That air pressure sits above the water and pushes it through the distribution lines to the galley and lavatory outlets. There is normally no individual pump at each faucet, so the answer to look for is air pressure, not a pump.
- Do vacuum lavatories work on the ground?
- Yes. On the ground and at low altitude there is little or no pressure difference between the cabin and the outside air, so a vacuum blower runs and creates the differential pressure needed to move waste to the holding tank. As the aircraft climbs, cabin pressurization supplies enough differential on its own and the blower is no longer required.
- Where does galley sink and lavatory wash-basin water go?
- That water is gray water and it is dumped overboard rather than stored. It flows through drain lines to a drain mast on the outside of the fuselage and discharges into the airstream. Only toilet waste goes to the holding tank, which is why gray water lines and the mast itself are heated instead of being routed into the waste system.
- Why must the potable water system be drained in freezing weather?
- Water trapped in tanks, lines, and valves expands when it freezes, which can split lines, crack fittings, and damage valves and the tank itself. Ice also blocks flow, so the system will not work when it thaws until the blockage clears. Draining the system, or keeping the line heaters powered, prevents that damage while the aircraft sits in the cold.
- What is the potable water filter for?
- It removes particles and sediment from the water before that water reaches the galley and lavatory outlets, so what is delivered to the crew and passengers stays clean. It is a cleanliness and quality device rather than a pressure-regulating one, and it is part of the same servicing routine that includes flushing and disinfecting the system.
